Importance of Equity and Access in Career Development
While often college planning is geared towards a wide range of individuals, with broad access being a focus to ensure that all students can plan for college, the same can’t always be said for career readiness and career development resources (Oppelt, 2023).
Often , many individuals lack exposure to diverse career options, or have assumptions that they’re limited to what they’re able to do more than they truly are (Oppelt, 2023).
Our Approach to Equity and Access
VI Career Development was built with specifically blind and visually impaired individuals in mind. The information and resources of this website were curated with the intent that it would all be accessible for technological accessibility features so blind and visually impaired individuals could find and access helpful sources regarding career development.
However, we also strive to have information and resources that include individuals who may also have different experiences or be in other situations, such as:
•First-generation college students
•Financially limited individuals
•Individuals facing systemic barriers
•Marginalized groups
Our site, information, and all resources included are fully open to access and most are completely free, with the exception of Coursera.
Resources are provided specifically for first generation college students, and all resources provide useful information for many groups of people.
We have also made sure to include 211 as a resource to cover any external barriers that may be negatively impacting, hindering, or completely halting career development.
Accessibility and opportunity go hand-in-hand, and we at VI Career Development strive to not only provide available resources for the blind and visually impaired, but any other group who may need them.
